5 tips to avoid plastic consumption

With a few simple habits, we can prevent the plastic invasion that is choking our oceans. Here are some tips to avoid and help reduce it:

1. Do not use plastic or biodegradable bags

Even though they're biodegradable, these bags take between 1 and 3 years to decompose. It's best to use cloth bags that you can use again and again.

2. Drink tap water, not bottled water

The best way to avoid using plastic bottles is to drink tap water. If the water in your area isn't safe to drink, you can use a filter—an investment that will save you money. We also recommend using reusable stainless steel or glass bottles to keep your water cold and take it with you wherever you go.

3. Buy food in bulk

Avoid excessive packaging by going to supermarkets that sell food in bulk, using your own reusable bags or glass jars.

4. Replace plastic containers with stainless steel or glass ones.

Storing and/or heating food in traditional plastic containers may be poisoning you, as heating plastic releases toxic substances.

5. Use natural cosmetics

Avoid cosmetics that contain plastic microbeads. Choose cosmetics with natural ingredients such as clay, nut shells, or seeds.

If it's impossible to reduce your plastic consumption further, remember to reuse those products as much as possible and, as a last resort, throw them in the appropriate container.
